Why we Celebrate Pavvurulun Afi Festival in Tuguegarao City

Set fire to the rain! Most people may think of August as part of the rainy season in the Philippines, but not in Tuguegarao City. Known as the hottest city in the Philippines with its recorded highest temperature, Tuguegareños embody fire not only in its climate, but also as a way as a celebration of life. Also, it comes in the form of a festival held yearly.

What is Pav vurulun AFI Festival?

Dubbed as “Pav vurulun AFI Festival,” this thanksgiving party is for all the blessings and abundance the city has received, also showcases how the people live up to their core values like unity and camaraderie. This year, the Pav vurulun festival is special and the much-awaited activity of the people after a two-year-long wait due to the pandemic.

What does Pav Vurulun Afi mean?

In Ibanag, the word Pav vurulun means "togetherness" while Afi means "fire". With the Pavvurulun Afi Festival derived from these two words in mind, this annual celebration spearheaded by the regional government center aims to fire up and promote the economic growth of this component city. True to its words, ever since its founding anniversary, the regional center saw the economy gradually shifted for the better.

Why does Tuguegarao city celebrate the Afi Festival?

1. To keep their culture alive

The provincial capital, along with its local government units and urban barangays, have organized several activities and festival events which include a food and trade fair, a folk song contest, tree planting, band competition, pansit festival, a beauty pageant for Miss Tuguegarao, and a street dancing competition which involves a choreographed dance frenzy.

This is to entice and engage the members of the community, from the youth to the more experienced elders to partake in the festival as a way of instilling the culture and promoting freedom of expression for the citizens of Tuguegarao City.

Part of their culture is to remember their origins, which involves remembering that it was priests along with Fray Tomas Villa, O.P. who led as the first vicar who founded Tuguegarao. As part of keeping their historic past alive, part of the celebration commemorates their patron saint, Saint Hyacinth of Poland, which is celebrated on August 16.

The celebration of life in the province really is just one big way for the inhabitants of Tuguegarao City to be grateful for their blessings, especially after the recent pandemic. All industries have been affected, but as this year's festival showed, both celebration and caution can be done, as most events happened not only within the Poblation area, but mostly outdoors and in well-ventilated infrastructure in order to follow social distancing protocols. Ensuring the safety and health of her constituents is the highlight of the new mayor of Tuguegarao city, Mayor Ting-Que.
