8 Kid Friendly Places in Tuguegarao City

Looking for a new place to explore this summer? Then why not discover the hidden gems of Tuguegarao City?

Dubbed as the “Gateway to Ilocandia and the Cordilleras,” the capital city of Cagayan province offers a lot of exciting places to see and explore! It is a budding tourism hotspot in Northern Luzon with a lot of natural caves, old churches, museums, and delicacies. Whether you’re up for a heritage tour, a thrilling adventure, or a delightful food trip, Tuguegarao has something in store for every kind of traveler – be it solo, with friends, or with family! So to make your planning easier, below is a list of must-visit places in Tuguegarao City that are perfect not just for you, but also to the kids!

1. Cagayan Museum and Historical Research Center

One exciting thing when traveling with kids is that you feel like you’re having a field trip! And what’s a field trip without visiting a museum, right? Cagayan Museum and Historical Research Center is the provincial museum of Cagayan where you get to know more about the province’s history and culture through the exhibits that consist of artifacts, fossils, ethnographic items, antiques, and artworks. This museum also has an archive and a research center to further study these ancient artifacts. So, if you want to know Cagayan more and bring home a few cents about the province, then this is a must-visit!

2. Rizal Park

Just like in Metro Manila, Tuguegarao has their version of Rizal Park, too! This Rizal Park is a bit smaller, though, and less grand but it doesn’t make this park any less worthy of a visit especially with kids! With the fresh provincial air and the park’s open space, you can jog, play outdoor games, do Zumba, or simply sit back and relax. The park’s charm truly shines once the sun sets as the lights illuminate the magnificent statue of Jose Rizal. Truly a perfect spot to end your adventure-filled day!

3. Buntun Bridge

Get ready to be transported to the Golden Gates Bridge of San Francisco because Tuguegarao has their local version of it! The Buntun Bridge is the second longest bridge in the country, stretching from Tuguegarao to Solano. It goes through rice paddies and plains with views of the mountains in the distance. You can have a walk or a jog on the strong and sturdy walkway, be amazed at the majestic view of the valley from this vantage point, and capture a moment in such a magnificent view.

4. Iguig Calvary Hills

This Tuguegarao tourist spot was once walked on not only by friars but by Spanish officials and merchants who traveled from one town to another by river to transport goods to and from their galleons. The Calvary Hills in Iguig consists of 11 hectares of rolling hills from which are mounted larger than life colored statues rendering a panorama of the Passion of Christ in Calvary. The sight of these big statues is made even more captivating by the view of the Cagayan River. To complete the awe-inspiring atmosphere is a chapel that has an authentic relic of the true cross, the Jubilee Cross Chapel.

5. Tuguegarao Cathedral

This church’s history dates back to Spanish times. Tuguegarao Cathedral has a maroon-ish color in cobblestone. On the other hand, its interior is just as stunning as its exterior because of its Baroque design, making it beautiful and exceptional. Definitely a perfect place to reflect and pray. Drop by for a while to take photos, pray or just rest before continuing your itinerary.

6. Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Piat

Another historical spot to visit is The Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Piat. This is considered to be the largest Catholic church in Cagayan. Located in the town of Piat, this church is home to the black image of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus on her left arm which was brought to the Philippines by the Dominican friars in 1604. This church has undergone several renovations and restorations to keep up with the number of devotees who visit and pay homage.

7. Callao Cave

Get ready for some adventure and be in awe when you visit Callao Cave! This is among the most popular caves in the Philippines and the most-visited tourist destination. Inside this majestic cave, you’ll see all sorts of formations in different shapes. There are different chambers here and the most popular one is the chamber called “Chapel” which is a section of the cave that the locals turned into a cathedral. The best time to visit here is when the sun is at its peak because you’ll see light dramatically fall into the cave through an opening.

8. Pinacanauan River

The Pinacanauan River plays an important role in the lives of the locals as its water is used for irrigation. Here, you can also try out a cool activity that you and the kids will surely enjoy – the Pinacanauan River Boating Experience! The best time to board a boat and go for a ride is when the day is about to end because this is when you’ll see several bats take up parts of the sky. After seeing the bats take flight, you then enjoy a scenic trip through a lush forest.

Tuguegarao City features beautiful nature, both underground and above, as well as several stunning places of worship and magnificent landmarks. Get to experience the amazing activities and stunning places here and you’ll surely never have a dull moment!
