With the pandemic still on the run in our country and the number of infected cases are still increasing, the government keeps on thinking of ways on how to reduce physical contact and observe social distancing nationwide.

Most of the services this year are being brought remotely online and the transactions are being made cashless, especially in the areas of trading and transportation industry.

Starting this month, all expressways in Luzon will be replaced with purely cashless toll collection. This means that motorists who want to utilize all the Luzon expressways are required to have Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags on their vehicles.

RFID is a sticker being put on the windshield of your vehicles which will be read by a detector once you pass a tollgate. The RFID scanners will then read the data and determine the vehicle class and its corresponding account then tell whether it has a sufficient balance to enter the tollgate or not. If the vehicle will meet all the requirements, the barriers will open allowing them to pass through the gates. According to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), this is significantly quicker than human transactions that may require money counting and issuing change.

If our motorists and travelers are not aware of these changes and not familiar with how these things work, moving in and out of the Metro could be much worry and a hassle, especially to our existing Lumina homeowners and house and lot buyers. So, let me give you a short briefing about it.

There are two kinds of RFIDs. First is the Easytrip RFID which only works on North Luzon Expressway (NLEx), Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx), Harbour Link, Cavitex, and Cala Expressway. The second one is the Autosweep RFID being used particularly on the tollways managed by San Miguel Corp. (SMC) which are the South Luzon Expressway (SLEx), Skyway, STAR Tollway, Naia Expressway (NAIA-X), and Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEx).
