Lack of Bigger Concert Venues Causing PH to Miss-out on The Eras Tour

Lack of Bigger Concert Venues Causing PH to Miss out on The Eras Tour

When Taylor Swift announced her Eras Tour concert, Philippine fans hoped (and expected) that she will go to the country for the third time since her Speak Now and Red tours, respectively. But much to the immense disappointment of Filipino Swifties, the only Southeast Asian nation to have been included from Taylor Swift's international dates was Singapore. The other Asian country is Japan, which is set for four consecutive shows in Tokyo. As of this writing, Singapore Sports Hub just announced that there will be three additional shows slated for the lucky Southeast Asian country.

While many Filipino Swifties remain hopeful of PH inclusion for Miss Americana's Eras tour, many have also admitted defeat and are now diverting their attention to securing tickets from the shows scheduled in Japan and Singapore.

In various social media spaces, Filipino fans curiously speculate as to what may be the reason why the Philippines, which is arguably the home to the largest number of bona fide Swifties in whole of Asia, was excluded from the stupendously much-awaited Eras Tour. Some are humor-infused memes as a coping mechanism, while a few got more serious. One theory that stood out is that the country's lack of bigger concert venues may be to blame.

Is there some truth to this speculation? Or is it time to move on from the heartbreak of exclusion and instead shift our focus to getting tickets from the two Asian countries that have been privileged to welcome the global pop superstar? Let's discuss this more in this article from Lumina Homes.

The Philippine Arena, World's Biggest Indoor Arena, Still Not Enough?

But first, let's get the numbers straight. The Philippine Arena, the world's largest indoor arena, has a seating capacity of roughly 55,000. This could match that of Singapore's National Stadium and Japan's Tokyo Dome, both of which also has similar seating capacity. So, is venue size really the main reason why the management behind the Eras Tour decided to amputate the Philippines from its Asian leg?

One social media user offered an edifying answer: it's not the seating capacity, but the country's hosting capabilities (or lack of it).

Besides, as seen in videos and reels published across all social media platforms, the production and set designs from the Eras Tour in the United States alone look insanely good. It therefore questions the country whether it's virtually capable of hosting such a humongous event featuring the Music Industry herself, Taylor Swift.

But wait—Canada was also skipped out

Be that as it may, there's another country whose Swiftie citizens took "offense" when theirs was also skipped and snubbed from Miss Swift's international leg: Canada.

After all, the North American country has always been part of Swift's past tours. Why skip it now, when her Canadian fans expect her most to bless them with her career-spanning music?

Canada-based media outlet CTV News speculated that it may also be about venue capacity. Like the Philippines, Rogers Centre in Toronto also has a seating capacity of 55,000. Other venues are either of the same stadium size or even smaller.

They also took it that maybe, just maybe, Swift and her team reckoned that her Canadian fans already have plenty of opportunity to go to the US, which has nearly 50 shows. Plus, Canadians in general have the economic means to fly to the US and treat the Eras Tour as their vacation.

Memes, Filipino Swifties' coping mechanism to the snubbing

Meanwhile, a legion of Pinoy fans just took the news with the signature Filipino humor. One Twitter account user posted a screenshot of Swift's song "I Forgot That You Existed" in light of the Philippines' exclusion from the international stops. Another user joked that he's looking for Spanish and Japanese people to shoulder his Eras tour ticket in Japan or Spain as compensatory damages to what our Spanish and Japanese invaders did to our Filipino ancestors back in the day.

Kenneth Manuel, a Bar topnotcher and a certified Swiftie, posted a Wikipedia screenshot of University of Santo Tomas' (UST) Paskuhan venue, which is believed to hold up to more than 100,000 people. Many others then followed suit and posted provincial venues where the "Cruel Summer" singer can alternatively go to.

Anyhow, the six shows in Singapore are expected to not be purely nor predominantly attended by Singaporean Swifties. Fans from the Philippines and other neighboring countries in Asia that have not been included from the Eras Tour will surely attend the Singapore leg, willing to shell out some of their savings to witness Taylor Swift and her world-class production in the flesh.
