Complete Guide for your Visita Iglesia in Nueva Ecija

The cathedrals of Nueva Ecija are on par with those in neighboring provinces in terms of size and splendor.

We are sure that aside from the blessings that you can get from visiting the churches in Nueva Ecija this Holy Week, you can also find some great enthusiasm in discovering the various catholic church which you haven't visited yet in the province.

In order to help you out in making your itinerary for your Visita Iglesia this year, we made a list of churches in Nueva Ecija that you must include visiting this coming Holy Thursday:

National Shrine of Virgen La Divina Pastora or Three Kings Parish Church  (Gapan City)

The Three Kings Parish Church in Nueva Ecija is one of the oldest churches and the biggest colonial church in the province. The Three Kings Parish Church, located in the heart of the city, is the largest and oldest colonial church in the province of Nueva Ecija and is a major tourist attraction. Because of this, the Parish Church is also known as the National Shrine of the Virgen La Divina Pastora.

The Augustinians took charge of the church's construction in 1856 and saw it through to completion in 1872 under their direction. Byzantine in style, with limestone and brick walls, is what the structure of the church is made of. The church's central dome also has a painting of the Holy Trinity by local artist Isidoro Samonte, who created it in the early 1900s.

The centerpiece of Marian devotion in Central Luzon is the figure of the Virgen La Divina Pastora, which is enshrined in the church. The Virgin Mary desired to be sent to Manila from Spain in a dream that Doña Juana Valmonte, a descendant of one of Gapan's most renowned families, had in the 17th century, according to a friar in Manila who heard her story.

The devotion to the Virgen La Divina Pastora was gaining traction in Spain at the time. The Galleon Trade ultimately brought a picture of Divina Pastora to Gapan. The image became an important part of the family, and May 1 was designated as the day to honor her.

Every year at her festival, people from all over Nueva Ecija flocked to witness her wonders delivered to them by the wind from the rice fields. After the Three Kings, the Virgen La Divina Pastora was named patroness of Gapan more than a century later.

After Doña Juana's death, the picture was handed over to the Valmonte family, who took great care to preserve it. Virgen La Divina Pastora's picture was canonically crowned on December 19th, 1963, by Pope Paul VI.

It was officiated by Reverend Mariano Gaviola, the first Bishop of Cabanatuan. Valmonte's descendants gave the miraculous picture of Divina Pastor to the Three Kings Parish on April 26, 1986, just before the church was designated a national shrine.

The National Shrine of Virgen La Divina Pastora or The Three Kings Parish Church is located at Three Kings Parish Church Compund, Three Kings Parish Church Building, Delos Reyes St, Gapan City, 3105 Nueva Ecija.

San Antonio Abad Parish Church (San Antonio)

Father Juan Tombo (OSA) began construction on this Augustinian church in 1848, but it was completely destroyed by an earthquake more than three decades later. A priest who uncovered the presence of the Katipunan, Father Mariano Gil (OSA), reconstructed the church in 1882.

This historic church suffered extensive damage during the Philippine Revolution in 1898. Fr. Florentino Guiao rebuilt the bell tower in 1954 after it was repaired. The church's sturdy walls nearly gave way to the massive fissures during the 1990 earthquake, which also caused severe damage to it. The church had a series of renovations throughout the following decades, giving it its current appearance.

San Antonio Abad Parish Churhc is located at San Antonio, 3108 Nueva Ecija.

Cathedral of St. Joseph the Worker (San Jose City)

The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Jose in the Philippines has authority over parishes in Nueva Ecija's northern region, and this cathedral in San Jose City serves as its seat. The soaring façade has an asymmetrical appearance because of the belfry being located only on one side.

The Cathedral of St. Joseph the Worker is located at San Jose - Carmen Road, San Jose City, Nueva Ecija.

Cathedral of Saint Nicholas Of Tolentine (Cabanatuan City)

Located in front of the square where General Antonio Luna was assassinated, the main parish of Cabanatuan City has undergone a major renovation. Located in the southern section of Nueva Ecija, it is the seat of the Diocese of Cabanatuan, a Roman Catholic diocese.

The Cathedral of St. Nicholas of Tolentine is located at Del Pilar, 3100 Cabanatuan, Philippines.

San Sebastian the Martyr Parish (Muñoz)

This is a modern-looking church across the main square of Science City of Muñoz, which features an octagonal entrance with a patron saint's niche above it.

The San Sebastian the Martyr Parish is located at San Sebastian St, Science City of Muñoz, 3119 Nueva Ecija.

San Isidro Labrador Parish Church (Talavera)

Nueva Ecija's San Isidro Labrador Church may not be the most well-known in the city. Then then, it isn't something to be ignored. The Church, despite its little stature, is a stunning sight to see in the shadows of the town proper main square.

The bricks used in the construction of the structure harken back to a period when they were the most common building material. The two bell towers of San Isidro Labrador Church set it apart from other churches. Because of this, it is one of the most distinctive churches in Nueva Ecija, if not in the Philippines.

In front of the church, two antique bells ring out for everyone to hear. The bells are known as the M.R.P.F. Paulino Escalada 1836. Some of the Augustinian structures in Nueva Ecija were under the direct supervision of Fr. Paulino Escalada of the Order of St. Augustine.

San Isidro Labrador or St. Isidore the Laborer is the patron saint of farmers.

San Isidro Labrador Parish Church is located at Maestrang Kikay, Talavera, 3114 Nueva Ecija.

St. John Nepomucene Parish Church (Cabiao)

St. John Nepomucene Church in Nueva Ecija is one of the best-known churches in the area. According to the church's history, the visita of Cabiao was created by the Jesuit Missionary in 1765-1767 about two decades later. The Augustinian missionaries recommended that it be raised to the Parish Church of St. John Nepomucene at the time when Cabiao was declared an independent town.

It was named after John Nepomucene, a Czech saint who was also known as the martyr of the confessional. John was healed of an illness as a child thanks to the prayers of his parents. Their gratitude to God was so great that they vowed to make him a devoted member of the Church for the rest of his life.

While serving as a priest in Prague's Old Town neighborhood, he established himself as a respected preacher, mediator, and confidant to the city's queen. Father John had confessed to King Wenceslaus IV, a terrible monarch, what his queen had confessed to him.

The King twice inquired, and twice the good priest refused to share his chats with the queen, despite repeated requests. The monarch was so enraged that he ordered the priest to be tortured and thrown into the river to die.

A peculiar luminosity arose on the sea around the site of Father John's drowning death. Floods and evil are averted when his name is invoked in the former Czechoslovakia. And his feast day is celebrated every 16th of May.

St. John Nepomucene Parish Church is located at Jose Abad Santos Ave, Cabiao, 3107 Nueva Ecija.

And since you are visiting Nueva Ecija, don't forget to also try their popular local delicacies in the province such as their Tilapia Ice Cream which is a perfect refreshment this coming Holy Week.

Another local dish that you must try during your breakfast or lunch in the province is their Batutay and Garlic Longganise. Meanwhile, one of the most popular pasalubongs among tourists who are visiting Nueva Ecija is the famous Aying's home made pastillas. Make sure to grab some so that you have some snacks while on the road and even give some to your friends and loved ones as pasalubong when you go back to Manila.

You also don't have to worry about the travel time from the city going to Nueva Ecija as the Department of Public Works and Highways or DPWH recently finished the six road development projects in the communities of San Isidro and Cabiao in Nueva Ecija which can greatly help in making the travel quicker and more comfortable to town centers for commuters and motorists.

This is apart from the Central Luzon Link Expressway or CLLEx. Through the creation of this new 66.4-kilometer expressway, there would be a less congested route in the Pan-Philippine Highway (PPH) from Zambales to Nueva Ecija.

And that is the reason why Lumina Homes saw the potential in this province and created two thriving yet peaceful communities through Lumina Cabanatuan and Lumina San Jose.
