Celebration of National Students Day 2022
17 November 2022
The Department of Education (DepEd) has planned a virtual celebration of National Students Day 2022 for September 17, 2022, with a theme of “Ikaw… Ako… Tayo: Bahagi ng Proseso at Boses ng Pagbabago.” The event will also have a prelude, a series of pre-event activities taking place from September 14 to 16, 2022.
This is in line with the declaration made by former President Rodrigo R. Duterte, who designated November 17 as National Students' Day under Republic Act 11369. This is in order to honor the role that student action has played in advancing democracy in the Philippines. Under this law, the National Youth Commission (NYC) serves as the main agency for developing and carrying out an annual program of events to commemorate National Students' Day.
DepEd, along with the Commission on Higher Education or CHEd, is supporting this event so that similar activities can be held at all appropriate public and private schools. Lumina Homes, an affordable house and lot segment from Vista Land, also supports National Students Day by building homes near schools-- providing youth the quality education they deserve.
What is National Students Day and Why is it Celebrated?
Founded in 1941 by the International Students' Council, November 17 is celebrated annually as National Students' Day and as a commemoration of International Students' Day by the Department of Education (DepEd). This is in accordance with Republic Act No. 11369, also known as the National Students' Act.
Every year on November 17th, the world celebrates International Students' Day to remember the nine people (eight students and their professor) who were killed by the German Gestapo in Czechoslovakia on that day in 1939 as a result of their participation in anti-Nazi rallies.
More than 1, 200 schoolchildren were sent to detention camps. On November 17, 1989, 50 years later and a week after the Berlin Wall fell, 15, 000 students rallied and marched in Prague demanding democracy and reforms, sparking the Velvet Revolution that ultimately led to the collapse of the communist administration in Czechoslovakia.
Looking back at Philippine history, it is clear that Filipino students in 1896 had the same zeal as the 1939 slain Czechoslovakian students and the patriotic students of 1989. Also, many of our national heroes gave their lives for our country and independence while they were still very young (see Annex). Students' nationalist passion left an indelible stamp on our history and continues to leave its mark in a variety of sectors, all of which contribute to the progress of the Philippines today.
Fast forward to this date and time, there is a renewed appeal for students to utilize their education to contribute to social change in the wake of the Philippines' proclamation of state of public health emergency due to the ongoing spread of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) as well as other environmental and social concerns.
Students in the era of the New Normal have begun to immerse themselves in social media in search of hope and ways to become heroes of the pandemic by spreading awareness, combating stigma and false information, encouraging frontline workers, and making their voices heard on a wide range of social issues.
With this, all regions, divisions, and schools are obligated to organize and implement a wide range of activities and events in the classroom that reflect DepEd's Core Values which are "Maka-Diyos," "Maka-tao," "Makakalikasan," and "Makabansa."
What to Expect for National Students Day 2022 Celebration
In accordance with Republic Act No. 1369, titled An Act Recognizing the Observance of November 17 of Each Year as the National Students' Day, DepEd invites all teachers, student leaders, and students to join in a virtual celebration of National Students' Day 2022 on November 17, 2022, and a series of pre-event activities from November 14-16, 2022, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, all of which will take place on the DepEd Tayo- Youth Formation official Facebook Page.
In honor of this year's theme, “Ikaw… Ako… Tayo: Bahagi rig Proseso at Boses ng Pagbabago,” the celebration aims to:
- Enhance the impact of students' individual efforts and the demonstrations of students throughout the nation and in all fields of study.
- Provide a space where students from a wide range of demographics may come together and take part in a variety of carefully planned interactive and participatory activities that encourage skill development, a strong sense of social responsibility, tolerance, and respect for individual differences.
- Provide a venue for Filipino students to meet one another, talk about what they care about, and the good work they're doing in the world, as well as to demonstrate their talents and interests in a variety of professions.
- Acknowledge the contributions of young people to the drive of national development.
- Value the "puso, galing, at talino" of young people as they bridge divides and open doors to chances for growth in all areas of life.
