Lumina Communities that will Benefit in the Reopening of PNR Lucena-San Pablo
16 June 2022The Philippine National Railways (PNR) line between Lucena and San Pablo is expected to be opened before Duterte's term ends in June and is now being revitalized and upgraded, this is according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
The construction of the Lucena-San Pablo line and the remainder of the PNR Bicol, which connects Metro Manila and the southern Luzon provinces, is now underway.
The Philippine National Railways (PNR)
PNR is the only operator of Luzon's most extensive intra-island rail network. Known in Filipino as Pambansang Daangbakal ng Pilipinas, the state-owned Philippine National Railways is frequently shortened as PNR.
The company runs two commuter train routes in Metro Manila and the Bicol region. Currently, the Bicol service is in rehabilitation in preparation for the return of the Bicol Express run to Naga City in Camarines Sur province, and then to the southern terminus in Legazpi City in Albay. An existent Metro Manila commuter service, the Orange Line, is a popular and well-used portion of the city's public transportation system.
During the Spanish colonial time, PNR was known as the Ferrocarril de Manila-Dagupan and subsequently became the Manila Railroad Company (MRR) during the American colonial period.
PNR's official start date was November 24, 1892. On June 20, 1964, Republic Act No. 4156 made it the Philippine National Railways. Under the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), the PNR serves as an attached agency.
PNR's Green and Orange lines
The North Main Line (Green Line) and the South Main Line (Orange Line) are owned by the Philippine National Railways, together with the three offshoot lines that service different sections of Luzon. There is now just one operational line, the South Main Line (Orange Line), which serves as the regional rail backbone of Southern Luzon and is currently under repair.
It now serves the Manila metropolitan region as well as Laguna, Quezon, Camarines Sur, and Albay in the Philippines. Aside from Batangas and Quezon City, PNR also served the provinces of Pampanga and Tarlac, as well as the cities of Nueva Ecija and Pangasinan on the North Main Line, respectively. It is expected that the North Main Line will be partially rebuilt as part of the North Rail project. Services that have been canceled in the past are also being revived.
PNR San Pablo - Lucena Route to open this month
In time for the end of the Duterte administration in June, the PNR Lucena-San Pablo line will reopen, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
In order to reestablish the PNR Bicol Express, the DOTr claimed that the PNR Lucena-San Pablo line is essential. This route would connect Metro Manila with the provinces of Southern Luzon, including Laguna, Quezon City, Camarines Sur, and Sorsogon.
From San Pablo to Lucena, travel time on the PNR Lucena-San Pablo commuter train service is expected to be slashed to one hour and thirty minutes. This can pave the way for the economic corridors in the provinces of Quezon and Laguna to be stimulated by the railway line, which would open up Southern Luzon's economic potential as a whole.
Other services of the reopening PNR Lucena - San Pablo line
The PNR Lucena-San Pablo line may potentially be used as a commercial or cargo freight service in addition to its current passenger commuter service.
According to the report, the rail line can now have ten trips per day. This will be made between Lucena and San Pablo, linking the two cities as well as moving goods from other provinces all the way to Manila. From Lucena, Quezon, to San Pablo, Laguna, the line will include two terminal stations and four flag stops in between. The travel duration link Metro Manila is expected to be 1 hour and 32 minutes.
There will also be a portion of the long-distance rail network's right-of-way utilized for PNR's "Bicol Express" South Long Haul Project.
PNR Lucena - San Pablo line through the years
Interprovincial commuter train service to Bicol has been suspended for almost a decade on the PNR San Pablo-Lucena route, a 44-kilometer inter-provincial commuter rail line that included stations and flag stops for everyday commuters and short trips.
It ran every two days in 2012, while the train line was operational. PNR Lucena-San Pablo commuter service was shut down when an abutment fell on the railway in October 2013.
