We've done the work for you! Here are six reasons why June is the best month for your wedding ceremony.
1. To Have a Traditional Wedding
Filipinos value tradition, and it even translates to having a traditional wedding. But have you thought of how marrying in June became part of wedding traditions? It has roots as far back as an ancient Roman tradition.
Wedding Tradition from the Romans
In order to rever Juno the Queen of the Roman gods, couples choose a June wedding because it is said to be Juno's month. Weddings are commonly performed during the festival of Jupiter, the Roman god of the sky. Juno—the Roman goddess, who is known in Greek mythology as Hera, is also believed as the goddess of marriage, childbirth, and fertility. Her husband, Jupiter, is the Roman counterpart of the Greeks' Zeus. Hence, in order to honor the Roman gods and receive blessings in their marriages, couples choose to hold their weddings in the month of June, named after the said goddess.
Celtic Wedding Traditions
However, becoming a June bride isn't just about gods and goddesses. Celtic wedding traditions also influenced why June is a preferred wedding month in the western culture.
According to the Celtic calendar, on the Cross-Quarter Day of Beltane, equivalent to the first of May in the modern calendar, young couples would pair off to court for three months. On the next Cross-Quarter Day called Lammas Day, which falls on August 1st, these couples agree to marry. However, some couples opt to marry early, and thus a short-term courtship ends in marriage around mid-June. As a result, June as the preferred wedding month was further strengthened.
European Christians' Weddings
The tradition of June weddings as a popular wedding month was observed in Europe during medieval times. Back then, the population was mostly Christian, that's why many couples follow church including being married in June.
It is unlikely that a wedding will happen during Lent (which is still true in many modern churches) as banns for a wedding must be read over at least three consecutive regular Sunday masses. They are read out in the main Sunday service in the parish where the bride lives as well as the church where is groom lived if that is in another parish.
This meant one had to wait until late spring to marry after the banns had cleared. In the Catholic faith, the banns are used to announce that there are couples who intend to marry and anyone can object and state the reason why the marriage may not lawfully take place.
In the Philippines, because the population is still predominantly Catholic, the banns remain among the popular wedding traditions still practiced today.
