How to Celebrate Holy Week at Home with Your Family
6 March 2023One of the most anticipated holidays for many Filipinos is the incoming Holy Week. It is an excellent season to go on vacation since it’s a long weekend. For pilgrims and devotees, the lenten season is the time to reflect and reconnect with their catholic faith once the Holy Week begins. Typically, lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday.
If you still don’t have plans for the upcoming lenten holiday, check out these eight (8) different ways to celebrate Holy Week at home with your loved ones.
8 Creative Ways to Celebrate the Holy Week
Let’s admit it; reading bible verses and attending catholic church activities might not be everyone’s cup of tea, especially if you already have kids. They tend to play with their gadgets and toys rather than go to churches. So, instead of doing the traditional ways to celebrate Holy Week, make it more creative and meaningful using these few tips below.
Create your own palm branch on Palm Sunday.
Palm Sunday, also known as Passion Sunday, symbolizes that Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem riding in a borrowed donkey. Upon entering, people shouted “Hosanna” while waving palm branches. During Holy Week, churches bless mass attendees’ woven palm crosses.
Make it more different and encourage your kids to understand the meaning of Palm Sunday. Create your own palm branch at home. Use construction papers, popsicles or sticks, and crayons to draw your own version of a palm branch and cut them out. Of course, don’t forget to tell the story behind it while making them.
Play with building blocks on Holy Monday.
As a reflection on Holy Monday, Jesus threw out those people who cheated out of money in the temple of Jerusalem. He was dismayed because people’s hearts were far away from God.
To make this story more interesting to your family and kids, use toy building blocks to build the temple of Jerusalem.
Paint a cross fingerprint craft on Holy Tuesday.
For Holy Tuesday, read the story about Mary, who anointed the feet of Jesus with perfume. People were mocking her because she was a sinful person.
As an activity, why not paint a cross fingerprint craft as a reminder of the forgiveness of sins? You can use acrylic, canvas, or oil paint for coloring.
Re-enact the humble act of Christ on Holy Wednesday.
On Holy Wednesday, read a story where Jesus washed the feet of His disciples before the last supper as an act of humbleness, love, and willingness to serve others.
To help your kids understand this humble act, demonstrate how it is being done. It might be a silly activity and awkward for them. But, the true meaning is more important to make them a better person when they grow up.
Make your own DIY last supper craft on Holy Thursday.
Traditionally, devotees re-enact the scene wherein Jesus washes the disciples’ feet and reads the new commandment during the last supper. It is also the night when Jesus tells them that two of His disciples will betray Him. One disciple, Peter, will deny Him three (3) times as one of His followers, while the other one, Judas, will sell Him for 30 pieces of silver in exchange for His whereabouts.
Since it is one of the highlights of the lenten season, encourage your family to watch a church mass online or on TV on Holy or Maundy Thursday. Serve them with a simple snack like sandwiches and juice. After watching the mass, let them do an activity relevant to the last supper. Use an egg carton tray as the table for the 12 disciples and Jesus. If you have a printer, print a picture of the printable last supper 3D craft and stick it on the egg tray.
Draw a Holy Week-themed drawing on sidewalks on Holy Friday.
Holy Friday or Good Friday is the day when Jesus was crucified and died on the cross. So, it is the most solemn day of the Lenten Season.
It would be ideal to tell your kids about this story and explain why Jesus sacrificed Himself to be crucified. Then, continue communicating with your kids by giving them a simple activity, such as using sidewalk chalk to create a Holy Week-themed drawing on your driveway or outside your home. Lastly, light a candle on your altar and pray together. Be sure to keep the candle lit up until the Easter Vigil.
Cook your family’s favorite recipe on Holy Saturday.
On Holy Saturday, Jesus’ body was taken off the cross and laid in a tomb with a stone door owned by Arimathea. The 12 apostles and Jesus’ other followers are preparing food for burial rites.
In line with this, Holy Saturday is also an excellent time to show off your cooking skills. So, cook your family’s favorite recipe and have a great meal together. But don’t forget to remind them what happened on Holy Saturday.
Host a scavenger hunt on Easter Sunday.
Easter Sunday means that Jesus has risen from the dead. So, it’s a feast or celebration of salvation. Usually, people and some establishments host an easter egg hunt to win some prizes. To commemorate Jesus’ resurrection, why not also host a scavenger hunt in your home? Find time to visit the nearest church, too.
