How to Say 'Home' in Different Philippine Languages
31 July 2023In a previous feature, we tackled how to say love in different Philippine languages. This time, why not learn how to say home but in every major local dialect in the country as well? After all, love can be regarded as synonymous to home as this is where we spend most of our times with the people we genuinely love. Moreover, this is where we take a well-earned rest if the outside world gets a little too overwhelming.
Whether you're going to Pampanga and want to learn a bit of Kapampangan, Ilocos Region to learn more Ilokano words, Bicol Region to speak some Bikolano terms, or to join the entire nation in celebrating Linggo ng Wika, it would be ideal to start with the basics and learn what a home translates to different languages in Filipino culture.
How to Say 'Home' in Different Native Languages
A house is a building with corners, walls, and a roof to shelter people, but a home is more than just a human habitat. And learning how to say the word in one's native language adds intimacy and authenticity when you engage in a conversation.
Whether it's the Buwan ng Wika (National Language Month) celebration or not, we can express our patriotism and love of country by learning words beyond our own language spoken at home. Below is a list of how you can convey "home" in different Filipino languages.
Tagalog: Bahay/Tahanan
"Bahay" is the Filipino word or Tagalog word that most, if not all, Filipinos are most familiar with, since the Filipino language is our unifying language that enables speakers with different linguistic backgrounds to converse with each other without learning each other's native tongue. But "bahay" literally translates to a "house." "Tahanan" in the local language, meanwhile, is more intimate and empathetic, which translates to a "home."
Pangasinense: Abong
Once you arrive at the melting pot province of Tarlac and would further go north, you will reach the culturally rich province of Pangasinan. In this part of Northern Luzon, its residents and locals refer to "home" as "abong."
Kapampangan: Bale
Known for their world-class cuisine and as the Culinary Capital of the Philippines, the Kapampangan language is unique and distinctive from Tagalog and is believed to have originated from Java in Indonesia. While Kapampangan's "bale" only differs in the second syllable from Tagalog's "bahay," it still separates the two Filipino languages, especially if used in a complete sentence.
Bicolano: Harong
The Bicol Region is popular as a vast tourist destination for its wide selections of natural sceneries, from beaches, volcanos, mountains, lakes, as well as classical churches and parks that are perfect for family getaways. Once you embark on a trip to Bicol, locals speak "home" as "harong" in their beautiful and sweet mother tongue.
Ilokano, Waray, Hiligaynon, Bisaya: Balay
Finally, there is a specific local translation for "home" that four native languages have in common: balay. Home is balay in Ilocano-speaking provinces such as Ilocos Norte and La Union; in Hiligaynon-speaking provinces such as Iloilo, Negros Occidental, and the southern parts of Sorsogon; in Bisaya-speaking provinces like Cebu; and Waray-speaking provinces such as Leyte and Eastern Samar. Waray is considered a part of three languages, which include Cebuano and Hiligaynon, creating a larger group called Visayan. This is why "home" in all three languages are all "balay," and expressing "love" also locally translates to "gúgma" for all three Visayas provinces.
